The term Mediatrix (or Medianeira) is a theological title attributed to the Virgin Mary to designate her role as intermediary and intercessor between humanity and God, acting in a manner entirely subordinate and dependent on Jesus Christ, the only absolute Mediator. This doctrine is based on two fronts: first, on Mary’s historical cooperation in accepting to generate the Savior, serving as a channel for Christ’s coming to the world; and second, in her continuous heavenly intercession, where she acts as a spiritual mother who prays for the faithful and assists in the distribution of divine graces. It is a function of cooperation based on love and grace, which aims to bring humanity closer to God without ever equating Mary with divinity or replacing the redemptive sacrifice of her Son.
