the sumptuous coat of arms associated with the Duchy of Anjou and the Kingdom of Naples (specifically under the lineage of Renato of Anjou), also integrated into Albrecht Dürer’s ambitious Renaissance heraldic series for the Triumphal Arch of Maximilian I. The imposing shield is divided into multiple quarters that bring together some of the most coveted pretensions and territories of Western Europe: the red and silver bands of Hungary, the golden fleurs-de-lis on a blue background from the House of Valois-Anjou, the emblematic Cross of Jerusalem (which we have already seen isolated at the beginning of this series), the golden fish or barbels positioned on their backs from the Duchy of Bar, and the red band with three silver eagles from the Duchy of Lorraine. Crowning the ensemble, the golden knight’s helmet holds a grand fleur-de-lis as its crest and is framed by exuberant blue paquifes dotted with small golden fleurs-de-lis, visually symbolizing how the intricate web of marriages and inheritances connected the Holy Roman Empire to the French dynasties and the disputed crowns of the Mediterranean.
