Oratio
Prayer is, in its deepest essence, the intimate and living encounter between the creature and the Creator, where the soul rises to God to know Him, love Him and unite with His will. Far from being a simple recitation of words or a fulfillment of religious duty, authentic prayer is a dialogue of love that springs from the heart. As Saint John Damascene defined it, it is the “elevation of the soul to God” – an inner movement by which the human being, recognizing his smallness and dependence, consciously turns to Him who is the origin and end of all things.
Prayer is, at the same time, gift and response. It is a gift because God, on his own initiative, calls the soul and attracts it to Himself, as Jesus teaches: “No one comes to me unless the Father draws him” (John 6:44). It is a response because man, freely, opens his heart to this call, as Saint Teresa of Ávila so beautifully summarized: “Mental prayer is nothing other than dealing with friendship, often being alone with those we know love us.”
Prayer is the breath of the Christian soul. Just as the body cannot live without breathing, the soul cannot live without praying. It is in prayer that man finds his rest, his strength and his truest identity, fulfilling what Saint Augustine expressed in an unforgettable way: “Lord, you made us for yourself and our heart is restless until it rests in you.” Prayer is the movement of this heart in search of its definitive rest in God.
