Israel

THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

A Comprehensive Exposition

‎ ‎

I. FUNDAMENTAL PREMISE: THE CHURCH AS THE NEW AND ETERNAL ISRAEL

A) The Scriptural Foundation

The traditional Catholic understanding is NOT that the Church “replaced” Israel in a hostile takeover, but rather that the Church IS the fulfillment and perfection of what Israel was always meant to be.

Key principle: God’s plan was never limited to one ethnic group, but always intended universal salvation through the Seed of Abraham—Jesus Christ.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

II. THE THREEFOLD CONTINUITY

1. Continuity of PROMISE

Genesis 12:3 – God’s promise to Abraham:
“And in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.”

Traditional Catholic interpretation:

  • This promise was never merely about ethnic Israel possessing Canaan

  • It was always about a universal blessing to all nations

  • Fulfilled in Christ and His Church (Galatians 3:8)

Galatians 3:16, 29:
“Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ… And if ye be Christ’s, then are ye Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.”

Conclusion: The Church (all who are “in Christ”) are the legitimate heirs of Abraham’s promise.

‎ ‎ ‎ ‎

2. Continuity of PRIESTHOOD

The Old Testament Priesthood:

  • Levitical priests offered animal sacrifices

  • Mediated between God and the people

  • Served in the Temple in Jerusalem

  • Limited by death – priests died and were replaced

The New Testament Priesthood:

  • Christ is the eternal High Priest “according to the order of Melchizedek” (Hebrews 5-7)

  • Melchizedek predates and supersedes the Levitical priesthood

  • Christ’s priesthood is eternal, perfect, and final

Hebrews 7:11-12:
“If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood… what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchizedek, and not be called after the order of Aaron? For the priesthood being changed, there is made of necessity a change also of the law.”

The Catholic Priesthood:

  • Participates in Christ’s one eternal priesthood

  • Offers the same sacrifice of Calvary (unbloody manner) in the Holy Mass

  • Is the continuation of the true priesthood foreshadowed in the Old Testament

Traditional conclusion: The Catholic priesthood is the authentic fulfillment of Israel’s priestly function, while the Levitical priesthood has ceased (no Temple, no sacrifices since 70 A.D.).

3. Continuity of WORSHIP

Old Covenant Worship:

  • Centered on the Tabernacle/Temple

  • Involved blood sacrifices for atonement

  • Used sacred vessels, vestments, incense

  • Had a liturgical calendar (Passover, Pentecost, Day of Atonement)

  • Prefigured the reality to come

New Covenant Worship (Catholic Mass):

  • The Body of Christ (the Church) is the new Temple (1 Cor 3:16-17)

  • The one perfect sacrifice of Christ is re-presented (made present again)

  • Uses sacred vessels, vestments, incense (continuity of form)

  • Has a liturgical calendar fulfilling the Jewish feasts:

    • Passover → Easter (Christ our Passover, 1 Cor 5:7)

    • Pentecost → Pentecost (descent of the Holy Spirit)

    • Day of Atonement → Good Friday (Christ’s atoning sacrifice)

Saint Thomas Aquinas (Summa Theologica):
“The sacraments of the Old Law were figures of something future (Christ), while the sacraments of the New Law contain and confer the grace they signify.”

Traditional conclusion: The Catholic Mass is the perfection of Temple worship, not its abolition.

III. THE OLIVE TREE ANALOGY (Romans 11)

Understanding the Metaphor

Saint Paul’s Image:

  • Root = The Patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob) – the foundation of faith

  • Trunk/Tree = The covenant people of God

  • Natural branches = Ethnic Israelites

  • Wild branches = Gentiles

What Happened?

Romans 11:17-24:
“And if some of the branches be broken off, and thou, being a wild olive tree, wert grafted in among them, and with them partakest of the root and fatness of the olive tree; boast not against the branches.”

Traditional Catholic interpretation:

  1. Some branches were broken off – Jews who rejected Christ were cut off from the covenant people

  2. Gentiles were grafted in – Not into a new tree, but into the same tree (continuity!)

  3. The root remains holy – The patriarchal foundation is unchanged

  4. Warning to Gentiles – Don’t boast! You were grafted in by grace, not merit

  5. Hope for ethnic Jews – They can be grafted back in (v. 23) through faith in Christ

The Crucial Point

There is only ONE olive tree = ONE people of God = The Church

The Church did not replace the olive tree; the Church IS the olive tree, with some branches changed but the same root and trunk.

IV. THE CHURCH AS THE “ISRAEL OF GOD”

A) Galatians 6:16 – The Key Text

“And as many as walk according to this rule, peace be on them, and mercy, and upon the Israel of God.”

Two interpretations exist:

  1. Modernist/Zionist view: “Israel of God” = ethnic Jews who believe in Christ (a subset within the Church)

  2. Traditional Catholic view: “Israel of God” = the entire Church, both Jewish and Gentile believers

B) Why the Traditional Interpretation is Correct

1. Context of Galatians:

  • Paul is combating Judaizers who wanted to impose circumcision on Gentile converts

  • His whole argument is that physical descent doesn’t matter anymore

  • What matters is being a “new creation” in Christ (Gal 6:15)

2. Parallel Scriptural usage:

Galatians 3:7:
“Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham.”

Romans 2:28-29:
“For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter.”

Philippians 3:3:
“For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh.”

3. The Church Fathers unanimously interpreted it this way:

Saint John Chrysostom (4th century):
“The Church is the true Israel, for it has succeeded to the rights and privileges of Israel.”

Saint Augustine (5th century):
“The New Israel is the Church of Christ, gathered from all nations.”

Saint Cyprian (3rd century):
“Outside the Church there is no salvation, because outside the Church there is no true Israel.”

V. THE TWELVE TRIBES FULFILLED IN THE CHURCH

A) The Symbolic Continuity

Old Testament Israel:

  • 12 tribes descended from Jacob’s sons

  • Represented the totality of God’s people

  • Often fractured and incomplete (10 tribes lost after Assyrian exile)

New Testament Church:

  • 12 Apostles (representing the 12 tribes)

  • Chosen by Christ to be foundation stones of the New Israel

Matthew 19:28:
“And Jesus said unto them, Verily I say unto you, That ye which have followed me, in the regeneration when the Son of man shall sit in the throne of his glory, ye also shall sit upon twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.”

Traditional interpretation:

  • The Apostles will judge the New Israel (the Church)

  • The 12 Apostles replace the 12 patriarchs as foundation

  • Revelation 21:12-14 shows this: New Jerusalem has 12 gates (tribes) and 12 foundations (Apostles)

B) The Book of Revelation’s Vision

Revelation 7:4-9:

  • First, 144,000 sealed from the “tribes of Israel” (12 tribes × 12,000)

  • Then, a great multitude “which no man could number, of all nations”

Traditional Catholic interpretation:

  1. Literal view (some Fathers): 144,000 = Jewish converts to Christianity

  2. Symbolic view (majority): 144,000 = Symbolic perfection of the Church

    • 12 (tribes) × 12 (apostles) × 1,000 (completeness) = Totality of the redeemed

    • Followed immediately by “all nations” = Same group, described two ways

Saint Bede the Venerable (8th century):
“The 144,000 signifies the universality of the saints, who are brought to perfection through faith in the Holy Trinity.”

VI. THE FULFILLMENT OF THE PROMISES

A) The Land Promise – Spiritually Fulfilled

Genesis 15:18:
“Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates.”

Did this promise require perpetual ethnic Jewish control of Palestine?

Traditional Catholic answer: NO.

Why?

  1. The promise was fulfilled under Solomon:

1 Kings 4:21:
“And Solomon reigned over all kingdoms from the river unto the land of the Philistines, and unto the border of Egypt.”

God’s promise regarding the physical land was kept.

  1. The promise always pointed beyond the physical:

Hebrews 11:8-10, 13-16:
“By faith Abraham… sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country… For he looked for a city which hath foundations, whose builder and maker is God… But now they desire a better country, that is, an heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.”

Traditional interpretation:

  • Abraham understood the true promise was heavenly, not earthly

  • The land of Canaan was a type (foreshadowing) of the Kingdom of Heaven

  • The true “promised land” is eternal life in the Heavenly Jerusalem

  1. Christ’s Kingdom is not of this world:

John 18:36:
“Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world.”

Luke 17:20-21:
“The kingdom of God cometh not with observation… for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.”

Traditional conclusion:

  • Expecting a physical, earthly restoration of ethnic Israel to Palestine is Millenarianism (condemned heresy)

  • The Kingdom of God is spiritual (the Church) and eternal (Heaven)

B) The Temple Promise – Fulfilled in the Church

Old Covenant:

  • Temple in Jerusalem = dwelling place of God’s presence (Shekinah)

  • The Holy of Holies contained the Ark of the Covenant

New Covenant:

John 2:19-21:
“Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up… But he spake of the temple of his body.”

Christ’s Body = The New Temple

1 Corinthians 3:16:
“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”

The Church (collective Body of Christ) = The New Temple

Ephesians 2:19-22:
“Ye are… built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ himself being the chief corner stone; In whom all the building fitly framed together groweth unto an holy temple in the Lord: In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit.”

Traditional conclusion:

  • The physical Temple in Jerusalem is obsolete

  • Any attempt to rebuild it would be a rejection of Christ’s fulfillment

  • The Church IS the true Temple, built with living stones (the faithful)

C) The Davidic Kingdom – Fulfilled in Christ and His Church

2 Samuel 7:12-13:
“I will set up thy seed after thee… and I will establish the throne of his kingdom for ever.”

Was this promise only about Solomon?

NO – Solomon’s kingdom fell. The promise required an eternal kingdom.

Luke 1:32-33 (Gabriel to Mary):
“He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.”

Traditional interpretation:

  • Jesus Christ is the eternal King of David’s line

  • The “house of Jacob” = The Church (spiritual Israel)

  • Christ’s kingdom is spiritual and eternal, not political and temporal

Catechism of the Council of Trent:
“The kingdom promised to David finds its perfection in Christ’s eternal reign over His Church.”

VII. THE NAME “ISRAEL” TRANSFERRED

A) What Does “Israel” Mean?

Genesis 32:28:
“And he said, Thy name shall be called no more Jacob, but Israel: for as a prince hast thou power with God and with men, and hast prevailed.”

Israel = “He who struggles with God” / “Prince with God”

B) Who Now “Wrestles with God”?

The Church:

  • Struggles in spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:12)

  • Prevails through Christ’s victory

  • Princes with God (1 Peter 2:9: “royal priesthood”)

Saint Paul’s Application:

Romans 9:6-8:
“For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children… They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.”

Traditional interpretation:

  • Being ethnically descended from Jacob ≠ Being true “Israel”

  • True Israel = Those who have faith in the promise (Christ)

  • The Church = The children of the promise = The True Israel

VIII. THE MARKS OF TRUE ISRAEL

How Do We Know the Church IS Israel?

Saint Paul gives us the criteria in Romans 9:4-5:

“Who are Israelites; to whom pertaineth:*

  1. the adoption,

  2. and the glory,

  3. and the covenants,

  4. and the giving of the law,

  5. and the service of God,

  6. and the promises.”

Let’s examine each:

1. THE ADOPTION

Old Testament: Israel was called God’s “firstborn son” (Exodus 4:22)

New Testament:

Romans 8:15:
“For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.”

Galatians 4:4-7:
“God sent forth his Son… to redeem them that were under the law, that we might receive the adoption of sons.”

Who has the adoption now?
✓ The Church – through Baptism, we become adopted children of God

✗ Modern Judaism – Rejects Christ, the means of adoption

2. THE GLORY (Shekinah)

Old Testament: God’s glory dwelt in the Tabernacle/Temple (Exodus 40:34-35)

New Testament:

John 1:14:
“And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father).”

2 Corinthians 3:7-11:
“But if the ministration of death… was glorious… how shall not the ministration of the spirit be rather glorious?”

Who has the glory now?
✓ The Church – The glory of God dwells in the Eucharist and in believers (temples of the Holy Spirit)

✗ Modern Judaism – No Temple, no Shekinah glory since 70 A.D.

3. THE COVENANTS

Old Testament: God made covenants with Noah, Abraham, Moses, David

New Testament:

Luke 22:20:
“This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.”

Hebrews 8:6:
“But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant.”

Who has the covenant now?
✓ The Church – We have the New and Eternal Covenant in Christ’s Blood

✗ Modern Judaism – Cannot fulfill the Old Covenant (no Temple, no sacrifices, no Levitical priesthood)

4. THE GIVING OF THE LAW

Old Testament: Law given at Sinai to Moses

New Testament:

Matthew 5:17:
“Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil.”

Romans 8:2-4:
“For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. For what the law could not do… God sending his own Son… that the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us.”

Who has the true law now?
✓ The Church – The law is fulfilled and perfected in Christ, written on our hearts by the Holy Spirit

✗ Modern Judaism – Follows Talmudic traditions that nullify God’s commandments (Mark 7:8-9)

5. THE SERVICE OF GOD (Worship/Liturgy)

Old Testament: Temple worship with sacrifices, priesthood, sacred vessels

New Testament:

Hebrews 9:11-14:
“But Christ being come an high priest of good things to come… by his own blood he entered in once into the holy place, having obtained eternal redemption for us.”

Romans 12:1:
“I beseech you therefore, brethren… that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.”

Who has the true worship now?
✓ The Church – The Holy Mass is the perfect worship, the re-presentation of Calvary’s sacrifice

✗ Modern Judaism – No Temple, no sacrifices; only synagogue prayers remain (incomplete worship according to their own scriptures)

6. THE PROMISES

Old Testament: Promises of a Messiah, universal blessing, eternal kingdom

New Testament:

2 Corinthians 1:20:
“For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”

Acts 13:32-33:
“And we declare unto you glad tidings, how that the promise which was made unto the fathers, God hath fulfilled the same unto us their children, in that he hath raised up Jesus.”

Who has the promises now?
✓ The Church – All promises fulfilled in Christ and given to those who believe

✗ Modern Judaism – Still waiting for a Messiah who already came 2,000 years ago

IX. THE PATRISTIC CONSENSUS (CHURCH FATHERS)

The Early Church Was Unanimous

Saint Ignatius of Antioch (c. 107 A.D.):
“Those who were brought up in the ancient order of things have come to the possession of a new hope, no longer observing the Sabbath, but living in the observance of the Lord’s Day… If, therefore, those who were brought up in these ancient practices attained unto newness of hope, no longer keeping the Sabbath but living according to the Lord’s Day… how shall we be able to live apart from Him?”

Saint Justin Martyr (c. 160 A.D.) – Dialogue with Trypho:
“For the true spiritual Israel, and descendants of Judah, Jacob, Isaac, and Abraham… are we who have been led to God through this crucified Christ.”

Epistle of Barnabas (c. 130 A.D.):
“Take heed to yourselves now, and be not like some, heaping up your sins and saying that the covenant is both theirs and ours. It is ours; but they lost it completely when Moses had just received it.”

Saint Cyprian of Carthage (c. 250 A.D.):
“If Abraham believed God and it was credited to him as righteousness, then surely anyone who believes in God and lives by faith is found to be a righteous person, blessed and justified in faith. Already long before, the holy patriarch Abraham was a Gentile by birth but believed in God… From this we see that the nations are blessed in faithful Abraham, and he is found to be the father of nations.”

Saint John Chrysostom (c. 387 A.D.) – Homilies Against the Jews:
“The Jews… have been cut off from the promises, and the Gentiles have been called; they have lost their place, and we have succeeded to their inheritance.”

Saint Augustine (c. 400 A.D.) – City of God:
“The Church even now is the kingdom of Christ and the kingdom of heaven. Accordingly, even now His saints reign with Him, though otherwise than as they shall reign hereafter.”

Saint Jerome (c. 398 A.D.):
“The name Israel has been transferred to the Church, and from that time all who believe, whether they be Jews or Gentiles, are called Israelites.”

X. THE INFALLIBLE MAGISTERIUM

Official Catholic Teaching Throughout History

Council of Florence (1441) – Cantate Domino:
“The Holy Roman Church firmly believes, professes and preaches that all those who are outside the Catholic Church, not only pagans but also Jews or heretics and schismatics, cannot share in eternal life and will go into the everlasting fire which was prepared for the devil and his angels, unless they are joined to the Church before the end of their lives.”

Pope Pius XII (1943) – Mystici Corporis Christi:
“By the death of our Redeemer, the New Testament took the place of the Old Law which had been abolished… On the gibbet of His death Jesus made void the Law with its decrees, fastened the handwriting of the Old Testament to the Cross, establishing the New Testament in His blood shed for the whole human race.”

Pope Saint Pius X (1910) – Oath Against Modernism:
“I sincerely hold that the doctrine of faith was handed down to us from the apostles through the orthodox Fathers in exactly the same meaning and always in the same purport.”

The Catechism of the Council of Trent (1566):
“The Church is called Catholic because it is diffused throughout the entire world, from one end of the earth to the other. It is called the congregation of the faithful because all the faithful of Christ are bound to profess the same faith and partake of the same Sacraments, under the same pastors and rulers, particularly the one vicar of Christ on earth, the Roman Pontiff.”

XI. THE LITURGICAL EXPRESSION

The Church’s Lex Orandi (Law of Prayer) Confirms This

Good Friday Prayer (Traditional Roman Rite – Pre-1962):
“Let us pray also for the Jews: that our God and Lord would remove the veil from their hearts; that they also may acknowledge our Lord Jesus Christ… Almighty and everlasting God, who dost not refuse Thy mercy even to the Jews: hear our prayers which we offer for the blindness of that people; that acknowledging the light of Thy truth, which is Christ, they may be rescued from their darkness.”

This prayer demonstrates:

  • The Church’s maternal desire for Jewish conversion

  • Recognition that unbelieving Jews are in spiritual darkness

  • Faith that Christ is “the light” that must be acknowledged

  • Continuity with apostolic teaching (2 Cor 3:14-16 – “the veil”)

Easter Vigil Liturgy:
The Church reads extensively from the Old Testament, showing:

  • The Exodus → Baptism (passage through Red Sea = passage through baptismal waters)

  • The Paschal Lamb → Christ our Passover (1 Cor 5:7)

  • Entering the Promised Land → Entering the Church

XII. ANSWERING OBJECTIONS

Objection 1: “Romans 11:29 says God’s gifts and calling are irrevocable!”

Romans 11:29:
“For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance.”

Response:

Context is key. Read verses 23-29 together:

  • Verse 23: Jews can be grafted back in “if they do not persist in unbelief

  • Verse 26: “All Israel shall be saved” – After the “fullness of the Gentiles

  • Verse 28: Regarding the gospel, they are enemies; regarding election, beloved for the fathers’ sake

  • Verse 29: God’s gifts are irrevocable

Traditional Catholic interpretation:

  1. God has not abandoned His plan to save “all Israel

  2. “All Israel” = The full number of elect (Jews + Gentiles = the Church)

  3. The “irrevocable” gift is the opportunity for individual Jews to convert (the door remains open)

  4. It does NOT mean that ethnic Jews are saved without faith in Christ

Saint Thomas Aquinas explains:
“The Jews, as individuals, can still be saved if they believe in Christ; the gifts and calling refer to God’s perpetual offer of grace, which He has not withdrawn, though it requires their acceptance through faith.”

Objection 2: “Doesn’t this teaching promote anti-Semitism?”

Response:

Absolutely not. Traditional Catholic teaching makes clear distinctions:

  1. Every human person has infinite dignity (made in God’s image)

  2. Christ died for all people – Jews and Gentiles alike

  3. The Church has always condemned hatred of Jews as persons

BUT:

  1. Theological error must be identified – Rejecting Christ is a grave spiritual error

  2. Charity demands truth – Leaving people in error is not love

  3. Mission of conversion is an act of love – We want all people (including Jews) to attain eternal salvation

Pope Saint Gregory the Great (6th century):
“Jews are not to be won by harshness but by gentleness… Just as license ought not to be granted them to presume to do in their synagogues more than the law allows, so they should not suffer curtailment in that which is conceded to them.”

The Church’s traditional position:

  • ✓ Protect Jews from violence

  • ✓ Allow them to practice their religion

  • ✓ Treat them with human dignity

  • ✓ Pray and work for their conversion to Christ

  • ✗ DO NOT affirm that they can be saved without Christ

  • ✗ DO NOT suggest their covenant is still salvific

Objection 3: “What about the State of Israel? Isn’t its existence a miracle?”

Response:

From a traditional Catholic perspective:

  1. The State of Israel (1948) is a political entity, not a theological reality

  2. It was founded primarily by secular/atheist Zionists (Herzl, Ben-Gurion, etc.)

  3. It does not recognize Jesus as Messiah

  4. Therefore, it has no special prophetic significance

The prophecies of Israel’s restoration:

  • Were fulfilled in Christ and the Church (spiritual restoration)

  • OR will be fulfilled when individual Jews convert to Christ (Romans 11:23-26)

  • Are NOT about a political state in Palestine

Saint Augustine (City of God):
“Carnal Israel now holds a place in the divine plan only insofar as individual Jews may convert to Christ. The kingdom promises are fulfilled spiritually in the Church, not politically in Jerusalem.”

Traditional Catholics do NOT:

  • Hate the State of Israel

  • Wish it political destruction

  • Deny its right to exist as a nation

Traditional Catholics DO affirm:

  • Its existence has no theological import

  • It is not the fulfillment of biblical prophecy

  • Zionism (the ideology) can be a distraction from the Gospel

  • Christian Zionism (the theology) is a Protestant error

XIII. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS

What Does This Mean for Catholics Today?

1. Identity:

  • We are the children of Abraham by faith (Gal 3:7)

  • We are the royal priesthood (1 Pet 2:9)

  • We are the holy nation (1 Pet 2:9)

  • We are the Israel of God (Gal 6:16)

2. Mission:

  • The Great Commission applies to all peoples, including Jews

  • Conversion of the Jews is not “offensive” – it’s essential for their salvation

  • Dialogue without evangelization is a betrayal of charity

3. Worship:

  • The Catholic Mass is the fulfillment of Temple worship

  • We offer the same sacrifice as Calvary (in an unbloody manner)

  • Our priesthood is the true continuation of Israel’s priesthood

4. Hope:

  • Our hope is NOT in earthly political kingdoms

  • Our hope is in the Heavenly Jerusalem (Heb 12:22)

  • Our citizenship is in Heaven (Phil 3:20)

5. Vigilance:

  • Reject any theology that suggests two paths to salvation

  • Reject any teaching that Jews don’t need Christ

  • Uphold the perennial doctrine: Extra Ecclesiam nulla salus

XIV. SUMMARY & CONCLUSION

The True Israel: A Summary

1. PROMISES: Made to Abraham for all nations → Fulfilled in the Church

2. COVENANTS: Old Covenant obsolete (Heb 8:13) → New Covenant in Christ’s Blood

3. PRIESTHOOD: Levitical priesthood ended → Christ’s eternal priesthood (Catholic)

4. SACRIFICE: Animal sacrifices ineffective → Christ’s perfect sacrifice (the Mass)

5. TEMPLE: Physical temple destroyed → Church is the living Temple

6. KINGDOM: Davidic kingdom fallen → Christ’s eternal kingdom (the Church)

7. WORSHIP: Temple liturgy ceased → Mass is the perfect worship

8. NAME: “Israel” was always spiritual → Church is the true Israel

9. PEOPLE: Ethnic descent irrelevant → Faith in Christ makes one Abraham’s heir

10. PROMISES: Land, throne, descendants → All fulfilled spiritually and eternally

The Definitive Statement

The Catholic Church IS the True Israel because:

✓ She possesses all the marks of Israel (adoption, glory, covenants, law, worship, promises)

✓ She fulfills all the prophecies given to Israel

✓ She continues the authentic priesthood and sacrifice

✓ She is built on the foundation of the 12 Apostles (the New 12 Tribes)

✓ She is the Bride of Christ (as Israel was the bride of Yahweh)

✓ She is the Universal Kingdom promised to Abraham

✓ She is the Temple not made with hands

✓ She is the New Jerusalem coming down from Heaven

The Exclusive Claim

This is not one interpretation among many.

For 1,900 years, this was THE Catholic teaching, affirmed by:

  • ✓ Sacred Scripture

  • ✓ Sacred Tradition

  • ✓ The unanimous consent of the Fathers

  • ✓ The Ecumenical Councils

  • ✓ The papal Magisterium

  • ✓ The Sacred Liturgy

  • ✓ The lives of the saints

Only after Vatican II (1962-1965) did this teaching come under attack.

Traditional Catholics maintain:
Truth does not change. The Church’s doctrine is perennial (unchanging).

If Vatican II contradicts 1,900 years of consistent teaching, then Vatican II is in error, not the perennial Tradition.

XV. FINAL EXHORTATION

To Catholics:

  • Embrace your identity as the True Israel

  • Reject false ecumenism that denies the necessity of conversion

  • Pray and work for the conversion of the Jews (and all non-Catholics)

  • Stand firm in the faith once delivered to the saints

To Jews:

  • Jesus Christ is the Messiah promised in your Scriptures

  • The prophecies have been fulfilled in Him

  • The New Covenant is the only valid covenant since Calvary

  • Come home to the fulfillment of all God promised your fathers

To All:

  • There is one God, one Faith, one Baptism, one Church

  • Outside the Church there is no salvation

  • The Church is not merely a Israel – She is THE Israel

  • Enter the Ark while there is still time

“For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus; Who gave himself a ransom for all.”
— 1 Timothy 2:5-6

“Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.”
— Acts 4:12
