The Deadly Threat of Communism to Our Holy Catholic Faith

As a traditionalist Catholic faithful to the perennial teachings of the Church before the modern confusions, I consider it my duty to warn about communism – this ideology which I consider truly diabolical and the greatest threat that our Holy Mother Church has ever faced in its two thousand years of history.

Militant Atheism: Declared War Against God

Communism is not merely an ideology that ignores God – it is a doctrine that declares war on the Almighty. Marx explicitly stated that “religion is the opium of the people” and that it must be eradicated. Lenin was even clearer: “Religion is a kind of spiritual moonshine in which the slaves of capital drown their human face.”

Consider these concrete examples of satanic persecution:

In Soviet Russia : After 1917, we witnessed the martyrdom of tens of thousands of priests, bishops, and religious. Metropolitan Vladimir of Kiev was assassinated in 1918. More than 40,000 churches were destroyed – churches that took centuries to build, reduced to rubble or transformed into atheistic museums and granaries. The magnificent Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, a symbol of the Russian Orthodox faith, was dynamited in 1931 on Stalin’s orders to build a “Palace of the Soviets” in its place.

In Spain : During the Civil War (1936-1939), Republicans supported by Communists murdered 6,832 members of the clergy – including 13 bishops, 4,184 diocesan priests, 2,365 monks, and 283 nuns. They desecrated churches, burned sacred images, and exhumed the corpses of nuns to display them in the streets. In some regions, simply being seen with a rosary was a death sentence.

In Mexico : During the Cristero War (1926-1929), the socialist government of Calles, inspired by Marxist ideas, closed all churches, banned public worship, and executed priests. Blessed Miguel Pro was shot in 1927 shouting “¡Viva Cristo Rey!” – his last words before dying for his faith.

In China : After Mao’s revolution in 1949, millions of Catholics were persecuted. Cardinal Kung Pin-Mei spent 30 years in prison simply for remaining faithful to Rome. Churches were destroyed, priests were forced to marry, and a schismatic “patriotic church” controlled by the communist state was created.

Dialectical Materialism: The Denial of the Immortal Soul

We Catholics know that man is not merely matter – we possess an immortal soul created directly by God, destined for eternal life. Communism denies this completely. For Marx and Engels, man is only the product of material economic forces. There is no soul, no afterlife, no divine judgment.

This is a monstrous heresy that destroys the very foundation of our Faith! If there is no immortal soul, why should we worry about salvation? Why avoid sin? Why would the sacraments have any meaning? Communist materialism reduces the human being – created in the image and likeness of God – to a mere animal, a biological machine.

Pope Pius XI, in his magnificent encyclical Divini Redemptoris (1937), declared: “Communism is intrinsically perverse, and collaboration with it cannot be admitted in any field by anyone who wishes to save Christian civilization.”

The Destruction of the Family: An Attack on the Fundamental Cell of Society

We traditionalist Catholics know that the family is a divine institution, established by God in the Garden of Eden. Marriage is an indissoluble sacrament between a man and a woman, ordered to the procreation and Catholic education of children.

Communism directly attacks this sacred order:

Engels , in his book “The Origin of the Family, Private Property and the State,” argues that the traditional family is merely a bourgeois construct that should be abolished. He advocated that women should be “liberated” from the home, and that children should be raised collectively by the state.

In the Soviet Union : In the early years after the revolution, they tried to implement these horrific ideas. They legalized abortion (1920 – being the first country in the world to do so!), made divorce extremely easy, promoted “free love,” and attempted to remove children from their families to educate them in state-run nurseries where they would be indoctrinated into Marxist atheism.

Alexandra Kollontai, a Bolshevik commissar, openly wrote defending promiscuity and saying that romantic love was “bourgeois.” Imagine! The sacrament of matrimony, instituted by Our Lord at the Wedding at Cana, reduced to a mere “bourgeois construct”!

In Maoist China : During the Cultural Revolution, children were encouraged to denounce their own parents if they showed any attachment to religion or tradition. They completely destroyed filial piety, one of God’s commandments – “Honor your father and mother!”

The Denial of Private Property: Institutionalized Theft

Our Lord Jesus Christ did not condemn private property – on the contrary, the seventh commandment, “Thou shalt not steal,” protects it! Saint Thomas Aquinas teaches that the right to private property is part of natural law, necessary for man to care for his family and practice charity.

Pope Leo XIII, in Rerum Novarum (1891), clearly taught: “Private and personal property is a natural right for man.” And he warned against socialism: “The socialist theory of collective property must be absolutely rejected as harmful to those very people it seeks to help, contrary to the natural rights of individuals.”

But what did the communists do?

In Russia : They confiscated all private property and forcibly collectivized agriculture. The kulaks (landowner farmers) were massacred by the millions. Stalin deported entire families to Siberia simply for owning some land. The Holodomor in Ukraine (1932-33) killed between 3 and 7 million people through artificial famine created by forced collectivization.

In China : Mao confiscated all the land and created the “people’s communes.” During the “Great Leap Forward” (1958-62), approximately 45 million people died of starvation due to communist policies.

In Cuba : Castro confiscated all property, including that of the Church. He transformed a prosperous Catholic nation into an impoverished prison.

This is not just an economic mistake – it’s a grave sin against the seventh commandment! It’s institutionalized theft, sanctified by Marxist ideology!

The Class Struggle: Institutionalized Hatred

Our Lord Jesus Christ preached love – even for enemies! “Love one another as I have loved you.” Charity is the queen of virtues. Saint Paul teaches that in the Church there is “neither Jew nor Greek, neither slave nor free” – we are all one in Christ.

Communism, on the contrary, preaches class hatred . Marx and Engels end the Communist Manifesto with: “The proletarians have nothing to lose but their chains. They have a world to win. Proletarians of all countries, unite!”

This is a call for violent revolution, for hatred of the poor against the rich, of the workers against the bosses. It is not social reform through Christian charity – it is the violent destruction of the social order through organized hatred.

Lenin was explicit: “We must cultivate hatred among the masses, hatred and more hatred.” What a horrible contrast to the words of Christ!

And the results? More than 100 million dead in the 20th century at the hands of communist regimes – the “Black Book of Communism” documents this genocide:

• USSR: 20 million dead

• China: 65 million

• Vietnam: 1 million

• North Korea: 2 million

• Cambodia: 2 million (1/4 of the population!)

• Eastern Europe: 1 million

• Latin America: 150,000

• Africa: 1.7 million

Systematic Lying: The Father of Lies

Our Lord said, “I am the way, the truth , and the life.” The devil, on the other hand, is called “the father of lies” (John 8:44).

Communism is fundamentally based on lies. Lenin explicitly defended the use of lies: “A lie told a thousand times becomes the truth.” Stalin perfected the art of deceitful propaganda, rewriting history and erasing people from official photographs.

They promise a “workers’ paradise” but create gulags, prisons, and concentration camps. They promise equality but create a new privileged class – the communist nomenklatura that lives in luxury while the people starve. They promise freedom but build walls to prevent people from leaving (the Berlin Wall is the perfect symbol of this hypocrisy!).

George Orwell, in “1984,” perfectly captured the essence of communist totalitarianism: “War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength.” A complete inversion of the truth!

The Destruction of the Liturgy and the Sacred

Wherever communism came to power, it saw a special enemy in sacred liturgy, in the rites that connect Heaven and Earth.

In Russia : Orthodox churches were desecrated, transformed into atheist museums, stables, and warehouses. Sacred bells were melted down to make weapons. Liturgical vestments were burned or turned into theatrical costumes.

In China : During the Cultural Revolution, Red Guards raided churches, burned missals, destroyed altars, and trampled on consecrated hosts. Sacrilege was encouraged as a “fight against superstitions”!

In Cambodia : Pol Pot attempted to create “Year Zero” – completely destroying all religious institutions. Of the 60,000 Buddhist monks, only 3,000 survived. The Catholics were almost entirely exterminated.

This systematic desecration of the sacred reveals the true satanic nature of communism. As Saint Paul says: “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12).

False Messianism: Secular Religion

Communism is not just atheism – it’s an anti-religion , a diabolical parody of Christianity. They have:

• Their “prophets”: Marx and Engels

• Their “messiahs”: Lenin, Mao, Stalin

• His “sacred texts”: Capital, The Communist Manifesto

• His “eschatology”: a classless society.

• Their “rituals”: ​​parades, assemblies, self-criticism sessions.

• Their “saints”: revolutionary heroes

• Their “relics”: mummified bodies of leaders (Lenin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh)

• Their “inquisition”: the secret police (Cheka, NKVD, KGB, Stasi)

Eric Voegelin, the great philosopher, correctly identified communism as a Gnostic “political religion” that promises salvation through esoteric knowledge (dialectical materialism) and revolutionary action.

But this is a false salvation ! Our Lord warns us: “Beware of false prophets” (Matthew 7:15). True salvation comes only through Jesus Christ, by the grace of the sacraments, in Holy Mother Church. Any promise of earthly paradise through political revolution is a satanic lie.

The Testimony of the Popes

These are not just my words – it is the constant teaching of the Magisterium:

Pius IX (Qui Pluribus, 1846) condemned the “monstrous opinions” of nascent communism.

Leo XIII ( Quod Apostolici Muneris , 1878) called socialism a “deadly plague” that infiltrates society.

Pius XI ( Divini Redemptoris , 1937) – the greatest papal condemnation of communism: “Communism is intrinsically perverse, and collaboration with it cannot be admitted in any field by anyone who wishes to save Christian civilization.”

Pius XII repeatedly condemned communism, declaring that Catholics who support communist parties are automatically excommunicated (1949 decree).

These are not political documents – they are teachings on faith and morals, part of the ordinary Magisterium of the Church!

Our Response

Faced with this mortal threat to our Faith, we cannot remain indifferent. Communism is not simply a different political option – it is an intrinsically evil ideology, fundamentally incompatible with the Catholic Faith in all its aspects.

As traditionalist Catholics, we should:

1. Pray – especially the Holy Rosary, as Our Lady requested in Fatima (1917, when she specifically warned about the “errors of Russia”).

2. Study – learn about Catholic doctrine and papal condemnations of communism.

3. To bear witness – to live our faith without compromise with this satanic ideology.

4. To warn – to alert other Catholics about this deadly danger.

Let us remember the words of Our Lady at Fatima: “If you heed my requests, Russia will be converted and there will be peace.” She gave us the solution: prayer, penance, devotion to Her Immaculate Heart.

May Saint Michael the Archangel defend us in this battle against the forces of evil! Long live Christ the King! Long live Mary the Queen!
