Queen of Portugal

Coat of arms of the Queen of Portugal in the context of the same Renaissance heraldic series developed by Albrecht Dürer’s workshop for the Triumphal Arch of Emperor Maximilian I. The flattery (or lozenge)-shaped shield, traditionally reserved for female heraldry, presents the classic arms of Portugal — characterized by the central silver field with five blue escutcheons loaded with besantes (the quinas), surrounded by a red border with gold castles — but features a fascinating historical feature at the top of the shield: a “wedding helmet” or fillet that splits to display the vertical stripes of Aragon and the arms of Burgundy, indicating a union of bloodlines. Crowned by a sumptuous royal crown of fleurs-de-lis and accompanied by the inscription in Gothic calligraphy “Ra d’na honor” (a stylized abbreviation for Queen of Dona Joana, referring to Joan of Portugal, who was queen consort of Castile and Leon), this visual element reinforces the grandiose family tree that the Habsburgs proudly displayed to legitimize their blood connections and claims to suzerainty with the most influential royal families of the Iberian Peninsula and throughout Europe.
