The Kingdom of Jerusalem was a Crusader state established in the Levant in 1099, following the First Crusade. Even after the physical loss of the territory of Jerusalem to Muslim forces in 1187 (and the ultimate fall of the kingdom in Acre in 1291), the title “King of Jerusalem” continued to be claimed by several important European dynasties (such as the House of Habsburg, to which Emperor Maximilian I belonged). That’s why a German artist designed this coat of arms centuries after the end of the kingdom.
