Albrecht Dürer’s heraldic series by illustrating how the political prestige of the Renaissance was measured by the accumulation of noble titles, where the inclusion of the golden harp on a blue background — a symbol that remains in Ireland’s official identity to this day — did not necessarily indicate direct territorial control by the Habsburgs, but rather a sophisticated piece of dynastic propaganda. By commissioning these engravings, Emperor Maximilian I used Dürer’s artistic mastery and the rigor of heraldic rules to visually record a complex network of alliances, inheritances and claims to sovereignty that connected his lineage to the oldest and most prestigious crowns in Europe, transforming national symbols into monuments of imperial status and power.
